HOUSE SLAB CONSTRUCTION
The concrete slab construction process includes the preparation of formwork, compaction of a slab bed, placement of reinforcement, pouring, compacting, finishing the concrete, removing formwork and curing the concrete slab.

Prepare formwork
Formwork is the frame for the concrete slab to be laid. Making sure the formwork is constructed correctly reduces the likelihood that the concrete slab is compromised by leakage, withstand the pressure of the concrete for example.
It is important to note that formwork needs to comply with building standards and guidelines.
When constructing the formwork, it is essential that it is level with the top of the concrete slab. The s ensures the slab can be finished with the screed level to the top of the formwork.
Measure the area
Place the formwork in situ and use a spade to mark around the outside edge of the formwork. This will mark the area you will need to dig out to the required depth.
Excavating the area
The site is excavated to near level to allow the surveyin to be completed to mark out the slab area and points to measure from. This also assists other trades like plumbers to be able to identtiifed where they need to service the area.
Place the formwork back in position and ensure that it is level using a spirit level. A trench may be needed to be dug to ensure that the formwork is set at the correct height. Backfill against the formwork so that it stays in place, and hammer in timber pegs at 100 cm intervals on the outside of the formwork to hold it firmly in position whilst you pour your slab.
Install reinforcement
Adding reinforcement mesh helps prevent the concrete from cracking. The reinforcement is placed plastic chairs placed closely together to support the reinforcing mesh and hold it in the centre of the slab. The reinforcement must be at least 5cm above the compacted base and around 4 cm below the top of the slab.
Pouring the concrete
Pouring the concrete footings, which support the walls and the concrete floor are then poured which often involves using a concrete pump to pour the concrete in position. It is important that the surface is flat and level with use of a screed held against the top of the formwork by working from side to side and moving from one end of the formwork across to the other. This may take multiple times and may involve filling in any low spots as you work the surface.
